NAF's educational design ignites students' passion for learning and gives businesses the opportunity to shape America's future workforce by transforming the learning environment to include STEM infused industry-specific curricula and work-based learning experiences, including internships. NAF has grown from one NAF Academy of Finance in New York City to hundreds of academies across the country focusing on growing industries including: finance, hospitality & tourism, information technology, engineering, and health sciences. NAF curricula is created in partnership with industry professionals and is designed around projects that help students make connections across subject areas, acquire valuable workplace skills, and see their education as a step towards long term career success. African American Youth STEM Initiative Participants
The African American STEM grant will provide an innovative, STEM focused education for students in five select Dallas ISD NAF Academies. Students will acquire the STEM skill sets for success in rigorous career-themed curriculum, themed-related work- based learning activities, internship assignments, and post-secondary education that should lead to success in securing high-paying jobs in the IT and STEM fields.
Students from the following academies will participate in the “STEM” the Economic Divide grant activities: 1) H. Grady Spruce AOE, 2) H. Grady Spruce AOIT, 3) South Oak Cliff AOE, 4) IDEA AOIT, 5) Wilmer Hutchins AOIT, and 6) Skyline AOIT.
Using district resources, the implementation of this grant will include equipment upgrades, new technologies, computer science integrated curriculum, and industry-led teacher professional development. These initiatives will support new state approved CTE Programs of Study in the IT and STEM career clusters such as Web Development, Programming and Software Development, and Cybersecurity.
The Fund II grant will enable Dallas ISD’s NAF Academies to target and prepare African American students with the education and work-based learning skill sets for them to be successful now and in the future. Targeted students will be able to complete Texas HB 5 endorsements in IT and STEM, complete paid high school internships, acquire post-secondary education in IT and STEM fields, and ultimately be eligible for lucrative careers in high-paying jobs.
